Sound of Music

Visit the land of the Sound of Music - starting in musical Vienna and ending in Munich. See the church where Captain Von Trapp and Maria were married in the film and in Salzburg see Mozart's birthplace. In Berchtesgaden you'll stop to see Hitler's favourite summer resort.

Day 1 - Depart USA
Overnight flight to Vienna.

Day 2 - Arrive Vienna (3 nights)
Welcome to Vienna, the capital of Austria. After check-in there's time to relax and unwind before meeting your Tour Director and fellow travelling companions for a Welcome Drink and to learn more about your tour programme. 

Hotel: Hilton Danube (3 nights)

Day 3 - Vienna sightseeing & at leisure
Our morning sightseeing tour with a local guide features the monuments and palaces of this musical city. The Imperial Boulevards lead us to the Opera House, the Hofburg Palace, the Parliament and St. Stephen's Cathedral. Our walking tour takes us into the oldest parts of the city near ‘Am Hof’. Later, free time perhaps to indulge in some Sachertorte and cream in a tempting pastry shop. Or why not take an excursion to Maria Theresa von Habsburg's favourite palace, the Schönbrunn, with its delightful fountains and gardens? This evening we enjoy a Highlight Dinner with wine together in a local restaurant. (Buffet breakfast / Highlight Dinner)

Day 4 - Vienna Woods Excursion
Our local expert takes us on a scenic drive into the nearby Vienna Woods where we stop to see Mayerling and the hunting lodge where Crown Prince Rudolph and his young mistress died in 1898. We also stop at Heiligenkreuz to visit the Abbey of the Holy Cross. Then there's time at leisure, perhaps to window-shop in Kärntnerstrasse or visit a museum. (Buffet breakfast)

Day 5 - Vienna – Salzkammergut – Salzburg (2 nights)
We drive along the Valley of the River Danube past Melk where we see Austria's greatest baroque monastery. From here we continue along the Danube Valley to the area known as the Salzkammergut. At Gmunden, with its beautiful Lake Château, we enjoy a tranquil and scenic drive along the shores of the Traunsee and Attersee, the largest lake in the Austrian Alps, to the Mondsee. We stop in the village to see the church where the marriage of Captain Von Trapp and Maria was filmed for The Sound of Music. Finally we reach the sugar-icing city of Salzburg for two nights. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

Day 6 - Salzburg sightseeing & at leisure
Today's morning walking tour with a local guide shows us the Getreidegasse with its colourful shops, the majestic cathedral and many of the locations used in the film The Sound of Music, as well as the birthplace of the great composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Later, you may wish to relax in one of the delightful coffee-houses or to shop in the chic boutiques. We will enjoy dinner at our hotel this evening. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

Day 7 - Salzburg – Berchtesgaden – Innsbruck
This morning after breakfast it's only a short drive into Bavarian Germany and to the National Park of Berchtesgaden – Hitler's favourite summer resort. We'll stop in the town before leaving Germany to re-enter Austria and the province of Tyrol. From here we continue past the Wilder Kaiser Mountains to the valley of the green River Inn, bringing us to the Alpine resort that grew up around the bridge over the Inn, Innsbruck. Here our Tour Director shows us the Wilten Basilica, the Olympic ski-jump, the Golden Roof, the Hofburg Palace and a special Hidden Treasure! Later, time maybe to enjoy a Tyrolean folklore show? (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

Day 8 - Innsbruck – Neuschwanstein Castle – Oberammergau – Munich (2 nights)
This morning after breakfast, we will return to the Bavarian mountains and Germany's most famous building, mad King Ludwig's Neuschwanstein Castle. We go up to the castle by horse and carriage and then enjoy a guided tour of its interior. Afterwards, it is only a short drive to the Passion Play village of Oberammergau. Here there is time to admire the many ornate wall-paintings on the village houses and to perhaps visit the Passion Play theatre before we arrive at fun-loving Munich. Tonight, why not get together with your fellow travelling companions and enjoy a few steins of beer in one of the many beer halls? (Buffet breakfast)

Day 9 - Munich orientation & at leisure
After breakfast we head out on our morning orientation tour which will show us the Hofbräuhaus, the Marienplatz with its Glockenspiel, and the majestic opera house. Time at leisure, then this evening we enjoy a Farewell Dinner together with our Tour Director and fellow travellers. (Buffet breakfast / Farewell Dinner)

Day 10 - Munich – USA
There is time to bid farewell to our Tour Director and touring friends as our vacation comes to an end. Airport transfers are available, conditions apply. (Buffet breakfast)

Free airport transfers:
Transfers on Day 2 at Vienna Airport will operate at 09.00, 12.00 and 15.00. Passengers arriving later should make their own way to the first hotel. Return transfers on the last touring day will arrive at Munich Airport at 09.30.

A spectacular drive leads us to a typical mountain village. Then we enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride through the magnificent alpine scenery. We stop for a drink before our return to Innsbruck.

Down in the heart of Munich’s old town we visit the world-famous Hofbräuhaus. Then on to a typical Bavarian restaurant where local dishes and drinks will be served.

Enjoy an excursion to the Nymphenburg Palace to admire the Gallery of Beauties, gardens and the Amalienburg hunting lodge. Then on to see the sites of contemporary Munich including the Olympic stadium where the games took place in 1972.

G23a - MUNICH. The Dachau Memorial Site
Outside the town of Dachau near Munich the first concentration camp was opened immediately after Hitler’s rise to power. The camp site is maintained as a memorial and excellent background information is provided.

A13 - SALZBURG. Berchtesgaden and Hohenringstrasse Excursion
Should optional A14 not be available, A13 will be offered as an alternative. A scenic drive in the Bavarian Alps to Berchtesgaden within sight of Hitler’s Bavarian Redoubt. Then via the Hohenringstrasse, we ascend 5000 ft along one of the most beautiful mountain roads of Europe.

A14 - SALZBURG. Eagle’s Nest Tour & Bavarian Alps
Driving deep into the National Park past bucolic farmhouses and picturesque villages, we arrive at the ruins of Obersalzburg. From here we transfer to special motorcoaches adapted to the scenic mountain climb to Hilter’s notorious ‘Eagle’s Nest’. Through the arches we will have splendid views up to the ‘Hohen Göll’ and across snow-capped peaks. (NB. This optional is weather dependent, and may not be available on all departures)

A28a - VIENNA. Dinner & Vienna Palace Concert
We will enjoy a delicious meal of Viennese specialities, with drinks, followed by a wonderful concert of Viennese classical music including some of the most famous works of Johann Strauss and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, performed by some of the most highly acclaimed soloists and dancers in Austria. A glass of champagne is included during the interval.

A41 - VIENNA. Excursion to Bratislava
Visit Bratislava, capital city of the Slovak Republic, stretching along both banks of the Danube River. During the 9th Century, the Great Moravian Empire centered their military, religious and administrative activities in the Bratislava Castle. This beautiful baroque city is well preserved; it was the scene of the coronation of Empress Maria Teresia; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart gave one of his first concerts here at the age of 6 .We will enjoy the guided tour through the city and the Castle.

A1 - VIENNA. Imperial Highlights
We enjoy a guided visit to the Palace of Schönbrunn, with its magnificently preserved state rooms and exquisite gardens. From the summer residence of the Hapsburg monarchs, we continue to the Crypts and Vaults of the Imperial family to hear more about their fascinating story.
